Santa Rosa Junior College wide receiver Isaac Torres, a first-team all-state selection for Regional 1, committed to Cal as a walk-on this week, which serves as a perfect ending to a film documenting his final JC season.

Torres was a multi-sport athlete at Piner High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., and became a football star at Santa Rose JC. He caught 51 passes for 872 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games this past season, and his 109 receiving yards per game ranked third in the state. He was named Santa Rosa JC’s Most Valuable Player and was a Nor-Cal All-Conference selection as well being named all-state for Region 1.

However, the story of Torres’ season goes well beyond the numbers. As reported in a story by the Santa Rose Press Democrat, Torres hooked up with young filmmaker Dominic Bowker to make a documentary about Torres’ final season at Santa Rosa JC.

Originally, Torres wanted the documentary to be a tool to help get him a football scholarship at a Division I school, but the documentary soon took on a life of its own. It took a deeper look at Torres’ experience this past fall, hoping to provide inspiration to viewers.

“A lot of times, (athletes) just look for highlight reels, but he wanted to go a different route. He wanted to tell an emotional, impactful story,” said Bowker, according to the Press Democrat story written by Kerry Benefield. “The fact that he wanted to go this extra route? That sold me on it there.”

After the season, Torres heard from a few four-year college football programs, but no scholarship offers. Then came the news from Cal.

Video of Torres and Cal message to Torres from the Press Democrat story:

Torres was not offered a scholarship; he would be a walk-on.

“It’s a walk-on spot. It’s not a scholarship. It makes the story better,” he told the Press Democrat. “I have so much faith in myself ... all I want is a fair shot and that’s what I’m getting.”

It’s unclear whether the documentary will continue at Cal. Torres and Bowker are seeking funding to pay for the documentary project.
