We reported on Wednesday that Notre Dame transfer wide receiver was expected to commit to Cal, and on Thursday he made it official with an announcement that he has signed with the Bears.

The timing of his commitment is ideal, because it comes on the same day that Jeremiah Hunter, Cal's best receiver the past two seasons, announced that he is putting his name into the transfer portal.

With Hunter, Taj Davis, and Brian Hightower all leaving, there should be a spot for Merriweather to make an immediate impact for Cal in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

He will be able to tell his Cal teammates a little bit about the ACC since Notre Dame played six games against ACC teams in 2023. Three of teams Merriweather played against this season -- North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest -- will be Cal opponents in 2024. Merriweather had at least one reception against each of those teams this past season.

.

"The biggest reason I picked Cal was fit," Merriweather told Brandon Huffman of 247Sports. "With a new offensive coordinator and emerging quarterback, there’s a huge opportunity for me to have an instant impact in a rising program."

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Merriweather, who was a sophomore in 2023 for the Fighting Irish, recorded 14 catches for 284 yards and two touchdowns this past season, when Notre Dame finished with a 9-3 regular-season record and a No. 16 CFP ranking.

His average yards per reception were an impressive 20.3, which was the best on the team.

In 2022 as a freshman, Merriweather played in seven games and caught just one pass; however, that one reception was a pivotal 41-yard touchdown catch against Stanford.

Merriweather is from Camas, Washington, and number of Pac-12 schools, including Washington, Arizona, Oregon, Washington State and UCLA, showed interest in him when he entered the transfer portal.

He was rated a four-star recruit as a senior at Union High School, and he had offers from Stanford, USC, Washington, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon and Tennessee before choosing Notre Dame.
