North Texas Names Its Starting QB for Cal Game: Stone Earle

The Mean Green's No. 2 quarterback is also expected to see playing time in the Sept. 2 game in Denton, Texas

North Texas has named its starting quarterback for its September 2 season-opener against Cal, and the Mean Green's quarterback competition has been eerily similar to the Golden Bears'.

Like Cal, North Texas had three players competing in preseason practice for the starting quarterback job.

And although North Texas coach Eric Morris named Stone Earle as his starter for the game in Denton, Texas, against Cal, Morris also said that Chandler Rogers will get playing time in that game as well.

Cal has not named a starting quarterback from its trio of contenders, but the Bears are also seriously considering using more than one quarterback in the road game against North Texas.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Earle was North Texas' backup quarterback last season, getting into four games off the bench.  He completed 5-of-8 passes for 45 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.  Earle is also a running threat.  He had 18 carries last season and rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown.

In the 35-32 loss to Boise State in the Frisco Bowl, Earle completed 2-of-4 passes for 21 yards and a touchdown and also ran the ball twice for 20 yards

Before that he spent two seasons at Abilene Christian, and was the starter there in 2021.

Rogers, who is also expected to play against Cal, spent the past two seasons at Louisiana-Monroe, and was the Warhawks' starting quarterback last season, when he completed 67.5% of his passes and rushed for 353 yards.

He started six games for Louisiana-Monroe in 2021.

Cal has yet to name its starting quarterback, but Sam Jackson V seems to be the frontrunner in the competition with Fernando Mendoza and Ben Finley.  Cal coaches are considering playing two (perhaps even three) quarterbacks in the game against North Texas.
