Raiders Re-Sign Ex-Cal QB Chase Garbers
Six days after the Las Vegas Raiders released Chase Garbers, the Raiders re-signed the former Cal quarterback last week.
Now the question is whether Garbers will get any playing time in the Raiders' preseason game against the 49ers on Sunday.
The Raiders had released Garbers on July 26 as they were set to begin training camp. And now he's back on a one-year deal.
Garbers still has an uphill battle to make the Raiders' regular-season roster. He is listed fourth on the Raiders' depth chart at the quarterback position, behind Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell.
Garoppolo is unlikely to play Sunday as he continues to recover from offseason foot surgery, and that is probably why the Raiders signed Garbers. It leaves the Raiders with three quarterbacks available, increasing Garbers' chances of seeing the field Sunday..
Garbers was a four-year starter at Cal, and the Raiders signed him as an undrafted free agent last year. He performed well in preseason action and nearly made the regular-season roster. But he was released on the last cut-down day and joined the Raiders' practice squad.
Garbers was elevated to the active roster for the final two regular-season games last season, but he did not get into either game.
To make the Raiders' roster this season, Garbers would have to beat out O'Connell, a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, and hope the Raiders keep three quarterbacks.
