Raiders Waive QB Chase Garbers

Former Cal quarterback was Las Vegas' backup for the final two games last season

Former Cal quarterback Chase Garbers must look for another NFL team to join, because the Las Vegas Raiders waived Garbers on Tuesday.

Garbers served as the Raiders' backup quarterback for the final two games of the 2022 season. Jarrett Stidham became the starter for the last two games after the team decided Derek Carr would not play in those games.  Garbers was Stidham's backup for the gmes against the 49ers and the Chiefs, but Garbers did not get into any games.

Garbers was not taken in the 2022 NFL draft, but was signed by the Raiders as a free agent.  He received considerable playing time in the preseason, and performed well, but he was one of the last players cut before the start of the regular season.

He was added to the Raiders' practice squad before the start of the regular season and was elevated to the active roster late in the season. Garbers might join the Raiders practice squad again this season, although that is not a certainty.

The Raiders have not released an official depth chart heading into preseason camp, but Garbers appeared to be the fourth-string quarterback before he was waived.  Jimmy Garoppolo is the presumed starter, assuming he is healthy enough, with veteran Brian Hoyer as his backup and Aidan O'Connell, a fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft, at No. 3.

Stidham signed with the Denver Broncos in the offseason.

Garbers was a four-year starter at Cal and broke the school record for career rushing yards by a quarterback.
