Reports: Ole Miss Aide Sterlin Gilbert Will Be Cal's Quarterbacks Coach
Sterlin Gilbert, a senior offensive analyst at Mississippi who previously had been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Syracuse and Texas, will be named Cal's new quarterbacks coach, according to a report on Saturday by FootballScoop as well as by Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports:
Cal needs to fill a vacancy at quarterbacks coach after Jake Spavital left as Cal's quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator to become Baylor's offensive coordinator Cal offensive line coach Mike Bloesch was elevated to the role of the Bears' offensive coordinator, but he will continue to be Cal's offensive line coach, leaving the job of quarterbacks coach vacant.
Reportedly, Gilbert will fill that vacancy, although no official announcement has been made.
Gilbert has extensive experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in college. He served in both capacities at Eastern Illinois in 2012 and 2013, and was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Bowling Green in 2014.
He was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Tulsa in 2015, and was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas in 2016, when the Longhorns went 5-7. Texas head coach Charlie Strong was fired after that season, and Strong took the head coaching position at Central Florida.
Gilbert served as Central Florida's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017 and 2018, and he was named McNeese State's head coach for the 2019 season.
He led McNeese State to a 7-5 record in his only season as its head coach before accepting the job as Syracuse's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, but was not retained for the 2022 season.
He did not coach in 2022, before accepting the job as an offensive analyst at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin this season.
