Cal Football: Bears Get Commitment From Utah Transfer WR Mikey Matthews
Cal will add another transfer wide receiver with the news that freshman Mikey Matthews of Utah has committed to play for the Bears.
Matthews, a 5-foot-8, 180-pounder from Irvine, caught 29 passes for 261 yards without a touchdown this past season.
Matthews announced his decision on social media.
He joins an incoming group of transfers led by Notre Dame defector Tobias Merriweather. The Bears previously had a commitment from Jaden Richardson, a Division III All-American from Tufts, but he since announced he will attend USC.
Matthews also was a return specialist for the Utes, with 15 kick returns for 309 yards and a 20.6-yard average that was fourth-best in the Pac-12. He returned 17 punts for 75 yards, a 4.4 average.
A four-star prospect at Mission Viejo High School, according to Rivals, Matthews had career totals of 177 catches for 2,402 yards and 28 touchdowns in 33 high school games.
He chose Utah out of high school among offers from Arizona, Colorado, Washington State and Tennessee, among others.
The Bears needed to add to their receiving corps after the loss of Jeremiah Hunter, who transferred to Washington. Hunter led the Bears in receptions the past two seasons, including 63 catches for 750 yards and seven touchdowns last fall.
