Cal Football Video: Justin Wilcox Discusses Chase Garbers, Who's Been Cleared to Play
Cal coach Justin Wilcox provided some big news regarding quarterback Chase Garbers Monday night.
"So Chase has been cleared to play as of today," Wilcox said, "and he hasn't played in a long time, so we won't be announcing anything in terms of the quarterback until later in the week.
"But what I will say is that Devon [Modster] did a heck of a nice job in the game [Saturday], and Chase has been cleared to pracice and play, but still must be evaluated."
Regarding the decision, Wilcox said, "We don't have enough information yet, but I have confidence in both those guys."
So it remains unclear whether Garbers will play in Saturday's 8 p.m. home game against USC (5-4).
It sounds like Cal is still watching Garbers to see how he and his shoulder react to the work. Garbers has not played since injuring his right shoulder in the second quarter of the Sept. 27 loss to Arizona State.
Cal might not need to rush him back into action, because Modster played his best game of the season Saturday, completeing 16-of-24 passes with three touchdown throws and no interceptions. He also ran 13 yards for a touchdown.
Regarding Modster's Saturday performance, Wilcox said, "I thought he was much more efficient; he was more accurate with the ball. He made some big plays with his feet. All those were positives. He played his best game."
Wilcox described the Bears against Washington State as "improved." In fact, it was Cal's highest scoring output of the season.
Cal noted some other significant injuries on Monday. Kekoa Crawford played on Saturday after missing four games, but he was put back on the "week-to-week" list, which means he is questionable for Saturday's game against USC. Wide receivers Nikko Remigio and Jeremiah Hawkins both missed the Washington State game, and both are considered questionable for Saturday.
