Byeong Hun An, Max Homa Still in Contention at Scottish Open

Former Cal golfers Byeong Hun An and Max Homa are very much in contention heading into the final round of the Scottish Open. And it could be an especially satisfying trip for Homa, who brought his infant son with him.

An, who tied a course record in the first round, is three strokes behind leader Rory McIlroy, and Homa is four shots back after Saturday’s third round at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland.

McIlroy fired a 3-under-par 67 on Saturday, leaving him at 13-under for the tournament. That’s one stroke ahead of Tom Kim, who is at 12-under after a round of 3-under 67. Another stroke back and tied in third place at 10-under are Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood, the latter carding the best round of the day – a 7-under-par 63.

An fired a 1-under 69 on Saturday, his third straight under-par round, and is tied with four other players in fifth place at 10-under. One of the players with whom An is tied is Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, who shot 3-under on Saturday.

An had two bogeys and a birdie on the front nine, but had birdies on the 10th and 16th to get to 1-under for the day. An is ranked 131st in the world and is looking for his first career win since turning pro in 2011 following his one year of college golf at Cal.

Homa is tied with two other players in 10th place at 9-under after carding a 3-under-par 67 in the third round, giving him rounds of 66, 68 and 67.

Homa, who is ranked eighth in the world, had an up-and-down start to his third round, recording two bogeys and five birdies over the first 10 holes. But he parred each of the final eight holes to keep himself in the mix to capture his seventh career title and third in the 2022-23 season.
