Former Cal Goaltender Drake Callender Named to U.S. Men's National Team
Former Cal goaltender Drake Callender has been named to the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team for its April 19 friendly against Mexico in the inaugural Allstate Continental Clásico in Glendale, Arizona.
U.S. Soccer made the announcement of the U.S. squad for that contest on Wednesday.
Callender is one of three goaltenders on the 23-man USMNT, although Sean Johnson is likely to be in goal as part of the starting 11. Callender is one of three players taking part in their first senior team camp, joining defenders Caleb Wiley and Joshua Wynder.
This is the first selection to the senior national team for the 25-year-old Callender, who previously was chosen for U.S. Under-23 National Team training camps in 2019 and 2021.
Currently the starting goaltender for Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer, Callender played for the Golden Bears from 2016 to 2019. He was named to three All-Pac-12 teams and three United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region teams as a collegian.
Callender leads the MLS in saves with 33 and ranks in the league's top 10 with an 80.5% save percentage.
