Cal Golf: Team Homakawa Fails to Make the Cut at the Zurich Classic

Collin Morikawa & Max Homa fall short by two strokes at the team event in New Orleans.

On a Friday where 35 teams finished at least 10 under par through two rounds, the Cal duo of Collin Morikawa and Max Homa failed to make the cut at the Zurich Classic.

Team Homakawa, as the duo dubbed themselves, shot 2-under 70 in foursome play at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans and missed advancing by two strokes. They wound up eight under for two days and were eight strokes back of the two-round leading tandem of Beau Hossler and Wyndham Clark.

Hossler and Clark carded a solid 67 on Friday after a sizzling 61 in the first round and through 36 holes have 16 birdies and zero bogeys. Neither of the two has a PGA tour victory. Clark is ranked 81st in the world and Hossler is 139th.

They take a one-stroke lead into the weekend over the teams of Kevin Mitchell and Sungjae Im and Sam Ryder and Doc Redman. Five more pairings are just two strokes out of the lead, including world No. 4 Patrick Cantlay and No. 5 Xander Schauffele.

Sean O’Hair and Brandon Matthews, who shared the first-round lead at 61, wound up with a 69 on Friday and slipped into the five-way tie for fourth at minus-14.

Morikawa, ranked No. 13 in the world, and Homa, at No. 7, were at minus-6 after Thursday’s four-ball play when they posted eight birdies and two bogeys. On Friday, they had three birdies and one bogey and never never threatened to close the gap while carding pars on the final eight holes.

As disappointed as Morikawa and Homa no doubt were after failing to reach the weekend in their first pairing together, the day was far worse for a couple of PGA veterans.

John Daly, 56, and David Duval 51, carded a second-round 83 in the foursome competition, the worst score ever in the alternate shot format in the six year history of the Zurich Classic. Needless to day, they missed the cut.
