Cal Golf: Rain Rules The Day at The Players, But Collin Morikawa Has a Share of 3rd Place
Heavy rains wreaked havoc on TPC Sawgrasss during Friday’s second round of The Players Championship, but Collin Morikawa was happy to leave the course after playing 11 holes.
The day after shooting a 7-under 65 to hold sole possession of second place, the 26-year-old Cal grad had two bogeys and was 1-over for the day when Mother Nature halted play.
"Kind of glad this rain delay and thunder came in and let the putter rest a little bit and hopefully come out hot tomorrow," Morikawa said.
Morikawa remains tied for third place at 6-under, sharing the spot with Ben Griffin and Min Woo Lee.
Morikawa began the day with a birdie on No. 1 then bogeyed the next hole — his first bogey in two days. He went to 1 over for the day when he bogeyed the eighth hole.
One other former Cal golfer is among the top 10, but it’s not world No. 7 Max Homa. A two-time PGA Tour winner this season, Homa completed his full 18 holes and is tied for 39th place at even par after shooting 72 for the second day in a row.
Instead, Byeong Hun An, a South Korean who played one season at Cal, was at minus-3 through eight holes and tied for eighth place at 4 under for the tournament.
Tied for first place are Christiaan Bezuidenhoutof South Africa, who was 4 under through 14 holes on Friday, and Adam Svensson of Canada, 4 under through 11 in the second round. Both sit at 8 under for the tournament.
Chad Ramey, the Day 1 leader after shooting a 64 on Thursday, blew up after hitting two tee shots in the water on the island-green 17 hole. He wound up with a quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 hole and is now tied for eighth place at 4 under through 10 holes.
Ahead by 3 strokes at one point Saturday, the 225th-ranked player in the world is now 4 strokes off the lead.
World No. 1 Jon Rahm withdrew from the tournament 30 minutes before his tee time due to a stomach bug.
