Cal Track & Field: Alum Camryn Rogers Climbs to No. 7 on All-Time World List in Hammer

Senior Kegan Schroeter breaks Cal's 37-year-old school record in men's hammer.

Cal athletes delivered a series of strong performances at the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend, but the headliner was former Golden Bears’ star Camryn Rogers, who ascended to No. 7 on the all-time world list after her victory in the invitational women’s hammer throw on Saturday.

Rogers, who completed her Cal outdoor eligibility last spring, threw 255 feet, 4 inches (77.84 metes) for the longest throw in the world this year by more than 12 feet. She eclipsed her previous best by six inches.

The 23-year-old Canadian, a 2021 Olympian, also broke the meet and stadium records set last year by American Brooke Andersen, and improved her own national mark.

Cal senior Anna Purchase of England placed second with a throw of 229-6 (69.97), short of the personal-best of 239-7 (73.02) she established last week at the Bears’ Brutus Hamilton Invitational. That mark leads the NCAA this season and resides at No. 6 on the 2023 world list and moved her to No. 2 on Great Britain’s all-time list.

Meanwhile, senior Kegan Schroeter, a transfer this season from Brown University, broke Cal’s 37-year-old program record in the men’s hammer, throwing 230-4 (70.21) to win the collegiate division. That exceeded the 1986 school record of 229-0 by Jari Matinolli of Finland, and moves Schroeter to No. 11 on the 2023 collegiate list.

Earlier during the four-day meet at Walnut, senior Amari Turner tied the Cal record in the women’s pole vault, scaling 14 feet 1 1/4 inches (4.30). That matched the five-year-old program standard set by Lauren Martinez.

Sophomore Mykolas Alekna, silver medalist in the discus for Lithuania at the World Championships last summer, continued to re-write the all-time collegiate leaders list. His throw of 224-3 (68.35) won the invitational title and was the third-longest in college history. Alekna now owns the top five marks ever by a college athlete.

Alekna’s toss of 224-4 (68.39) last week at the Brutus Hamilton meet is the 2023 world-leading mark.
