UC Basketball Director Of Player Development DerMarr Johnson Taking Assistant Coach Position At West Virginia
CINCINNATI — UC basketball's director of player development DerMarr Johnson is taking an open assistant coaching position at West Virginia.
Johnson is reuniting with his former head coach at Cincinnati, Bob Huggins.
The seven-year NBA veteran had been on Wes Miller's staff last season as well, starting his role in May 2021.
"Obviously, DerMarr is a guy who I know very well," Huggins said in a press release. "He has a great amount of experience from being the national player of the year in high school, to the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, to the NBA and a 16-year professional basketball career. He's extremely well-liked by former players, coaches, and fans alike. He has a tremendous presence in the Washington, D.C. area, being one of the most-recognized athletes to come out of there in a long time. I'm thrilled that he's joining our program and look forward to him getting on the court."
Johnson played one season at Cincinnati in 1999-00 (13 points, 3.7 rebounds) before being a top-ten pick in the 2000 NBA Draft.
"I'm excited for this opportunity to work with my coach, and I'm looking forward to getting to know and working with the players and staff," Johnson said. "I can't wait to get started to help this basketball program."
UC now trudges forward without Johnson's voice on staff.
The Bearcats are back in action on Wednesday at South Florida. The game tips at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
