Wes Miller Updates CJ Fredrick's Health, Discusses Team Trajectory During Cincinnati's Big 12 Bye Week

Fredrick has not played since aggravating his hamstring on Dec. 22.

CINCINNATI — Bearcats head men's basketball coach Wes Miller met with the media on Tuesday as Cincinnati gets a break from midweek games before a matchup against No. 5 Houston on Saturday.

Fredrick has still not gone through a full live practice as a crucial step to playing in games.

"I think anytime somebody's been out for an extended period of time with an injury it's unfair to have too high of expectations for their performance," Miller said. "The main thing with CJ is trying to get him back into live play in practice. Getting good consistent days together. And then getting to a place where he can play in the games. So we're just kind of taking it one step at a time."

Overall, Miller knows his team can still reach another level after fighting through adversity across the first two-thirds of the season. Cincinnati is one of 17 teams in the country with a positive conference point differential, but a losing overall conference record.

"I don't have some illusion that if CJ plays in his first game that's the best game of his college career, but I will tell you CJ just being out there on the court will impact our team in a positive way. We understand it's a process but just having his presence out there, his experience, the things he can bring to a basketball team. That's going to help us regardless of how well he plays. Everyone's going to have some adjustment coming off of a long break."

Cincinnati is trying to take out Houston for the first time since 2020 as they aim to break a streak of nine consecutive losses to their old AAC rivals.
