Report: Big 12 Fielding Interest From Investment Firm
CINCINNATI — The Big 12 could be getting an influx of money from a private equity firm. CBS Sports reports the league is looking at "a possible cash infusion of $800 million to $1 billion from Luxembourg-based CVC Capital Partners in exchange for a 15% to 20% stake in the league," Dennis Dodd reported.
The money would reportedly boost Big 12 schools close to the annual revenue that Big Ten and SEC schools bring in (top two revenue conferences). The Big Ten is earning $75 million in annual media revenue for its schools, while the Big 12 is sitting at $31.7 million.
Dodd noted that three Big 12 presidents are currently hammering down the details of what a partnership could look like after CVC made a pitch to the Big 12 in the spring.
The Big 12 has to find a way to keep pace with college athletics' biggest players and private equity might have to present a bridge to get there.
