Tigers shine behind Clark
DURHAM, N.C.-- With their season and postseason hopes on the line, the Clemson Tigers responded in the way that championship-caliber teams do--they took care of business, as Tiger pitcher Mat Clark carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth inning before he allowed his first hit and run of the game.
Facing the ACC Pitcher-of-the-Year, Reid Detmers, the Tigers plated their seven runs on 12 hits that included a three home runs en route to a 7-1 win Thursday in the ACC Baseball Tournament.
The Tigers struck first in the top fo the third inning. After two walks and a double by Michael Green loaded the bases, with two outs, Kyle Wilkie roped a double off the left field fence that plated two runs. On the play, Logan Davidson was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Tigers continued to get to pound away at Detmers, as Justin Hawkins blasted a home run into left field that scored Sam Hall and Jordan Greene to extend the lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth.
The top of the fifth inning marked the third straight inning the Tigers added to their lead, as Greene's two-out single extended the Tigers' lead to 6-0.
Wilkie continued to hammer Cardinal pitching, as he connected on his fifth home run of the season that gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
Pinch hitter, Zach Britton broke up the no-hit attempt and put the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the ninth inning, as he connected on a solo home run.
Clark earned the win for the Tigers. Detmers took the loss for the Cardinals.
Tigers Tracks:
- Clemson finished in fourth place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with a 15-15 league mark.
- Overall in the ACC standings, Clemson tied for seventh place with Duke (15-15).
- Clemson's ACC schedule was tied for second toughest among the 14 teams based on the combined ACC record of teams it did not face (40-50)
- Clemson has had a non-losing ACC regular-season record 11 years in a row and 46 of the last 47 years.
