Hype is a dangerous game in college football. Countless teams and players have been media darlings prior to a season, only to have a quick reality check squash any preseason notions or ambitions. So when the updated Heisman odds have Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik ranked as the top candidate in the ACC prior to starting his first-ever regular season game, some folks may flinch at the notion, especially with the level of talent in the conference.

This isn't to say Klubnik won't live up to the billing, he certainly may, but there are some quarterbacks in the conference with a much longer track record of success. BetMGM's updated Heisman odds have Klubnik at +1400 to win the award, just ahead of Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis (+1600). Meanwhile, North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, who many will be the first or second quarterback taken in next year's NFL Draft, is at +1800.

ACC Heisman Odds, BetMGM

  • Cade Klubnik Clemson +1400
  • Jordan Travis Florida State +1600
  • Drake Maye North Carolina +1800

The 6-foot-5 Maye tallied over 5,000 yards last year and Travis has a more proven cast around him, but Klubnik is still ranked above them both. Now, Klubnik does have a secret weapon: new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley. The former TCU OC sent Horned Frogs quarterback Max Duggan to the Heisman Ceremony last year after Duggan started the season on the bench. Clemson fans are hoping he can work the same magic. If Klubnik did win, he'd be the first Clemson player to ever claim the award.
