Clemson Football: Positive trends for the Tigers despite loss
The running back duo of Phil Mafah and Will Shipley have been stellar. How Shipley single-handedly carried the offense in the first half made things easier on Garret Riley. Registering 60 total yards and one touchdown showed that Shipley was ready for the challenge. Phil Mafah did his job on Saturday, showing why he could be a bellcow back at any school. Mafah ran with an intent to be physical and always finish the run falling forward, ending the day with 69 rushing yards while averaging 6.9 yards a carry.
The young stars T.J. Parker and Tyler Brown showed that the youth is ready for big-time roles within the team. Parker's stats may not show it but he did a tremendous job making Jordan Travis uncomfortable in the pocket whenever he was in the game. Tyler Brown was the go-to target for Cade Klubnik whenever a big play was needed. Brown showed his swiftness on the perimeter making defenders whiff on tackles. He also showed that he is willing to put his body on the line whenever he stretches out for the 28-yard grab.
Troy Stellato coming out party was not on anyone's bingo card on Saturday. Whenever it was a third-down situation the ball seemed to be in the hands in his hands to continue the drives for the Tigers. Seeing Stellato being a security blanket for Klubnik was reminiscent of Adam Humphries for his role towards Tajh Boyd. Stellato steadiness is very much needed within this wide receiver room and look for continued production for him because of his play.
Klubnik showed that he can rise on the big stage when all eyes are on him. The Duke game may have fans sold off thinking Klubnik may not be the guy going 27 for 43, 209 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception. Klubnik responded on the big stage by going 25 for 38, 293 total yards, and 2 total touchdowns. Klubnik outplayed Travis who is considered a Heisman contender in this game. Going from Watson to Lawrence the expectations skyrocket but the way Klubnik has improved each start there is a star in the making again at the quarterback position for the Tigers.
