College players at programs the caliber of Clemson spend an unseemly amount of hours, days, weeks, and years preparing for their big moment on the big stage in a nationally televised game. However, for Jonathan Weitz, the idea of even being on the roster wasn't in his plans as little as two weeks ago.

In fact, the backup kicker from last season was planning on moving to New York to start a career in finance soon. That all changed with a call from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. "I got the text on Sunday. I was sitting in Charleston and all of a sudden, you know, my life changes completely," Weitz told reporters. "I'm about to head to New York, supposed to move up there, and now I'm heading to Clemson to go kick footballs. I hadn't done it since April."

That whirlwind of a turnaround would be enough to send anyone's head spinning, which is particularly bad for a position that's known for needing to aim straight. The kicker spoke about the start of the could-be fairytale after nailing his first attempt for the first points of the game, "When I knew we were getting into field goal range I kinda had that super amped heart rate... starts going, and then when he called field goal everything went smooth. I went out there and looked at Clay, I thought I hit it really good all day."

Unfortunately for Weitz, the dream didn't last. With the hopes of a team, a program, and a season riding on a player who wasn't even on the roster the previous week the moment may have been just slightly too big.

"I'm honestly pretty confused right now because I thought I hit the last one pretty good too but it just wasn't enough...When I hit I thought I hit it good and I look up and it's just dying left and there's nothing you can do."

There are probably very few more lonely and isolating moments in sports than a field goal kicker who misses a game-winner. Even the fans of the victorious team don't want to dwell too much on the heartbreak and guilt being felt by one athlete during a game that contains at least 100 men on both sidelines.

The one uplifting, though small, glimmer of light was the reaction of Weitz's teammates after the devastation. "What I remember is everyone just said they had my back. They said it's all part of your story. You're about to go and get another chance to go out there and win it for us."

If his teammates are right then maybe the last chapter of the storybook hasn't been written yet after all.
