Myles Murphy Looking to Impress in April Before Draft
Myles Murphy is going to be one of the top selections in this year's draft. He's known as a surefire first-rounder and will be the jewel of Clemson's draft class in 2023. The problem is he hasn't been able to show off his immense athletic ability yet due to, in his words, "a little tweak in my hamstring" just before the combine happened earlier this month. What is more concerning is Murphy still not being ready at Clemson's Pro Day.
Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus said of the defensive linemen, "Myles Murphy is too good to pass up. He's this year's version of Travon Walker." That's high praise and should excite those in Myles' camp. The problem is Walker, last year's No. 1 overall pick, shot up draft boards because he was able to wow the crowds with his NFL Combine performance, giving scouts an up close and personal experience with just how athletic he was for his size. It's those memories that tend to stick with scouts and general managers and as of now, Murphy's stock may be in danger of falling, at least slightly, because of those problems. That's how fine the margin is for drafting players in the NFL. One tweak could potentially cost a few million.
The good news is that Myles does still appear to believe he will be healthy enough in time to wow scouts just before the Draft, sometime in April. His goal time is to run a "sub 4.55" which would clearly place him high in that category for guys his size. Murphy told reporters his overall goal for the eventual April workout was to show "How fast I really am. A lot of people, they see the speed, but I don't believe it's really recognized." Myles Murphy will have one last opportunity to make sure that this workout leaves a lasting impression on an NFL team's mind before they write a name down in the first round.
