Rapid Reaction: Clemson blasts Charleston Southern 66-17
The No. 25 Clemson Tigers (1-1, 0-1 ACC) used a 28-point third quarter to pull away from Charleston Southern in a 66 to 17 win in front of a packed home crowd at Memorial Stadium. Things weren't always smooth for the Tigers, turning the football over twice in the first half, but it felt as if the team finally worked out some kinks.
Quarterback Cade Klubnik overcame a rough start to put together a strong performance. On the day, Klubnik completed 28 of 37 passes for 315 yards, 4 TDs with 1 interception. The one interception was costly as Klubnik flung a ball into the air while being sacked. The errant throw was picked off and easily returned by Charleston Southern for a score.
That was the story of the first half. Early in the second quarter, the Tigers were deadlocked with the Buccaneers at 14-14 and the Bucs hadn't picked up a single first down. The game went to the half with Clemson ahead just 24-17.
Whether it was halftime adjustments or just the offense settling down, Clemson came out roaring in the second half, scoring 28 points in the third and 14 in the 4th. Three different Clemson quarterbacks (Cade Klubnik, Hunter Helms, Paul Tyson) led a touchdown drive.
While the offense found its footing, Clemson's defense remained dominant. The group, which gave their offense countless opportunities in week one, stepped up once again, forcing 8 three-and-outs in 14 drives. Charleston Southern had just two drives that went more than 4 plays. Freshman defensive end TJ Parker continued to impress, leading the team with 4 tackles and 3 TFLs.
It was far from a perfect performance, but this felt like the "preseason" game Clemson needed. Rust fell off, players started to click, and Clemson began to find an identity. This was a good first step in getting the season back on track. They'll have one more chance to find themselves against FAU next week before Florida State comes to town.
