Trevor Lawrence claims 2018 Clemson team is one of the GOATs
It's no surprise that the first team in college football history to post a record of 15-0 would be considered an all-time great team. However, probably due to some ACC bias, most people don't have 2018 Clemson in mind when talking about the best teams in the history of the sport. In fact, some people may even have the Deshaun Watson-led title team ahead in that discussion. Trevor Lawrence would disagree.
During an appearance on The Pivot Podcast, with former NFL players Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor, Lawrence spoke about just how good that 2018 roster was. "I was fortunate to be surrounded with, honestly, one of the best college football teams of all time. In my opinion. It's a hot take. You guys probably got other opinions but we had Christian Wilkins, A.J. Terrell, Clelin Ferrell, Austin Bryant, Dexter Lawrence, myself, Justyn Ross, Tee Higgins, Travis (Etienne), Hunter Renfrow and so on and so on...Trayvon Mullen was in at corner, we had K'Von Wallace who plays for the Eagles now. We were loaded."
Ryan Clark responded, sounding as if his eyes had been opened, "At the time I didn't necessarily realize that but you naming it, bro that's crazy."
The former first-overall pick admitted that maybe even he didn't fully appreciate the level of quality he had around him at almost every position, "I didn't even know it either. I came in and I'm like obviously Clemson's good. We've been in the hunt the years before I got there and then coming in I was like, alright, I mean you don't know what you don't know. I guess this is a normal team."
It's not just the names on the roster that make up a legendary season, the performance has to match it and the best hair in the NFL agreed, "The year was nuts. The year we had and just the way we ended up playing those last two playoff games. Crushed Notre Dame and Alabama to win it. It's like pretty, pretty historic. And then you learn over time how special that team was. We all come back and all these guys are gone...It was a special year."
