NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 Colorado vs. Iowa: How to Watch, TV, and Game time
The Colorado Buffaloes have reached the Sweet 16 for the second year in-a-row under coach JR Payne. They’ll face the Iowa Hawkeyes led by Senior guard Caitlin Clark, who was recently named the NCAA all-time scoring leader.
The fifth-seeded Buffaloes are one of four PAC-12 teams remaining in the tournament. They comfortably knocked down Drake in the first round and most-recently Kansas State in the second round to advance. The top-seeded Hawkeyes had a small scare in the second round against West Virginia but closed out the game for a 64-54 win to move on for another Sweet 16 bid.
While the Hawkeyes have Clark as their leading scorer averaging just under 32 points per game, the Buffaloes have three players with double-figure scoring averages. The Buffs are led by junior forward Arrronette Vonleh, who averages 14 points per game, along with guards Jaylyn Sherrod (12.9) and Frida Forman averaging (12.5).
The Buffaloes entered the tournament last year as a six seed and scored a major upset over Duke before meeting the Hawkeyes in the Sweet 16. After a hard fought battle, JR Payne’s had their run ended in a 87-77 loss with Clark going off for 31 points.
In eight seasons, Payne has led the Buffs to three appearances in the NCAA tournament since becoming the head coach in 2016. During a press conference this week, she said last year’s experience will make a difference with several returning players.
“I think it was one of the best games of the tournament last year,” Payne said. “And so I think just, I think everybody will go back and rewatch the film and figure out, you know, what, what worked, what didn't work.
“Of course, there's been a lot of games, you know, since that one. And so I think both teams are also different in some ways. And so just gonna try to figure out and analyze how we can take advantage of any perceived weaknesses they have and I'm sure they'll be doing the same for us.”
Among the returning players, several played in last year’s Sweet 16 matchup in Seattle. Sherrod was one of those players and said she expects the team to have a different approach to Saturday’s game.
“I know we, you know, had a lot of missed opportunities in that game that were in our control, just being focused and finishing free throws, layups, simple things that, you know, count and add up,” Sherrod told reporters. “So I just think controlling we can control and, and focusing on the details more than anything.”
Tomorrow afternoon’s matchup marks the eight in program history against Iowa.
