Another Sanders is looking to break the mold at Colorado
As the wind blows on a crisp October day, only one thought comes to mind. Basketball season is upon us. That’s right, we are less than two weeks away from opening tip-off for the Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team.
In what will be their last year in the Pac-12, the Buffs will look to make this season one to remember. While they look to improve on a season which saw them make it to the Sweet 16, they will also be bringing in some star-studded talent. Shelomi Sanders, youngest daughter of football head coach Deion Sanders, made the transition to Colorado with her brothers.
As a redshirt freshman, Shelomi is poised to make some noise with a roster full of talent. The 5-foot 6 guard coming out of Rockville, Texas, by way of Jackson State, can be a formidable asset for the Buffs. Following her father and brothers, Shilo and Shedeur Sanders, Shelomi, or “Bossy” as her family calls her, is looking to create her own path. As a marksman in high school, she can provide CU with an added spark on offense.
Colorado comes into the season ranked 20th in AP’s Top 25 under coach JR Payne. Last season bore witness to one of the best seasons in Lady Buffs' basketball history outside of the Ceal Barry era. They finished the regular season at 25-9, which included a seven-game winning streak that helped propel them to the NCAA tournament. That was before hitting Iowa and future WNBA star Caitlin Clark.
Sanders appeared in only two games after coming over in the transfer portal. In those set of games, she played a total of nine minutes scoring two points and garnering a rebound and a steal. While the numbers seem low, it's what she was able to do in limited minutes that stood out as something to build off of going into this season. Bossy's charisma and enthusiasm is infectious and could be another element that helps her onto the court.
Coach Prime showered her with praise as he made an instagram post filled with photos of his daughter.
“Shelomi Sanders I'm PROUD of you babygirl. Keep working, keep growing and keep on loving the process and the game. @cubuffswbb Let's go! Please follow my baby and give her love." With a full season awaiting her, the skies the limit on what she could do.
The Lady Buffs hit the hardwood in Las Vegas to open the season against top-ranked LSU on Nov. 6. It's part of the Hall of Fame Series tournament and will feature the defending national champs with returning star Angel Reese AKA Bayou Barbie.
