Bob Barker's history with Colorado traced to Ralphie

The 'Price is Right' host leaves behind a rich legacy

Bob Barker will be remembered as a legend in the entertainment world. Outside his time in Hollywood and taking hosting duties for the 'Price is Right' on a 35-year run, he was an outspoken animal rights activist.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World's Greatest MC who ever lived, Bob Barker has left us," publicist Roger Neal said in a statement. Barker died Saturday at the age of 99.

During his near-century run on earth, Barker was one of the most passionate individuals I've ever interviewed. He was gracious enough to give me nearly a solid hour of his time seven years ago. I asked about coming up in the Navy to going on-air as an early radio personality.

Barker's career went mainstream with 'Truth or Consequences' prior to the projects he's most known for, like 'Price is Right.' We also remember his tussle with Adam Sandler in the 1996 smash hit 'Happy Gilmore'. Barker will be missed but leaves behind one hell of a legacy.

We talked about his love for sports and how the St. Louis Cardinals paid him $1 every year, not to pitch. He also said LeBron James was the GOAT in the NBA. But few people know his love for sports transcended into the world of Colorado athletics with the care for Ralphie.

Barker never liked the idea of having a live mascot due to the inhumane conditions forced by some institutions. However, he appreciated Colorado and Ralphie's handlers for how they took care of her. In fact, Barker gave money to help the efforts of Ted Turner's 'Flying D Ranch,' and also coordinated the transport of animals to Colorado's wildlife sanctuaries over the years. Turner was gracious enough to donate Ralphie IV and V to the University of Colorado starting in 1998.

Ironically, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders played four seasons for Turner, who owned the Atlanta Braves during Prime's MLB days starting in 1991. A little known fact is that Sanders came close to a stint in the NBA in the 90s with the Atlanta Hawks, which was also owned by Turner at the time.

This article wouldn't be complete without a proper Bob Barker sign off. We're reminding you to help control the pet population — have your pets spayed or neutered. Goodbye, folks.
