CU Buffs alum Raegan Pebley is WNBA’s newest General Manager
Former Colorado basketball player Raegan Pebley was announced as the General Manager of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks this week. It is a huge honor for the longtime Division I coach, who led TCU's basketball program to three straight seasons with over 22 wins. Pebley also coached Fresno State to back-to-back conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances.
Pebley played on CU women’s basketball team in the mid-90s led by famed Buffs coach Ceal Barry, who posted a 106-24 record and four straight conference titles during that time.
In her sophomore season, the Buffs won a school record 30 games and made an appearance in the Elite Eight round of the 1994 NCAA tournament. CU had won 25 straight games before falling just short to Georgia in the regional final. Pebley was an impressive player in her own right and holds school records at Colorado. She earned All-Conference honors twice during her career and is one of ten in CU’s players to score over 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in school history.
Pebley returns to the WNBA as an executive. She was a third-round pick by the Utah Starzz (21st overall) in the 1997 WNBA Draft, but didn't stay long. Pebley moved on to the Cleveland Rockers in 1998 and played in 22 games that season. A short two-year stint in the league and was also moonlighting an assistant at George Mason to start her coaching journey.
The WNBA is part of her story and legacy. But it’s her time in Colorado that holds a special place in her heart. She takes on the position with the Sparks, who are in need of better leadership within the organization. The WNBA's original franchise has missed the playoff each of the past three seasons and owns the No. 2 overall pick in April's draft.
