Op-Ed: It's time to chill out on the Sanders' hate
The Colorado Buffaloes are further along than anticipated. From a one-win team under Karl Dorrell to a shot at the postseason less than a year later is an accomplishment. Rick George made arguably the biggest hire in CU football history.
Week in and week out Sanders graces the media with his presence. Setting the field ablaze with his smile and charisma accompanied by the dedication to the game. Even now as they prepare for another primetime game, he continues to bring a sense of calm to the team.
I bet you’re wondering which Sanders I’m talking about. Well, the answer is very simple, both. Deion Sanders came to Colorado to make a change. While Coach Prime arrived for said change, his son, current Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, had the same idea when he joined the team in the transfer portal.
As the father-son duo brings eyes to the team, along comes the criticism. Fans near and far have taken issue with Coach Prime’s coaching style. From the day of his arrival, to last week’s comments about the offensive line, it became very clear that this team was going to be run under Sanders' regime.
The Buffs sit at 4-4 with a 1-4 record in Pac-12 conference play. The season started with a bang and has trickled down to nothing more than defective pop rock. This has led to people calling for Sanders' job and labeling Shedeur as a “product of his environment.” It's clear fans don’t understand the process. This culture Sanders is trying to build is going to require more than a year to get going.
Coming from Jackson State, which has weaker competition, many expect success on a silver platter. Let’s give it a chance. Many coaches struggled in their first year or two and Sanders is no different.
As of 2020, Sanders has a coaching record of 27-8 so how about we settle down and let him build the team he and his staff have envisioned. The team isn't a complete wreck. They have a top five passing game with stars on both sides of the ball. Stop bashing the coach and his players and let the system develop for the better.
The naysayers are going to talk because that's what they do best. Anyone who calls themselves a supporter of Sanders should be happy with the progress and the program taking steps in the right direction.
