Jay Norvell denies "hat and glasses" comments directed at Deion Sanders

The CSU Rams coach lives in an alternate reality

In one of the wildest rebuttals in college football history, Colorado State coach Jay Norvell now says his comments from last week's radio show appearance actually weren't directed at Deion Sanders.

"The comments that I made last week were directed at our kids," Norvell said. "It was about what we ask them to do. We ask them to take their hat off and glasses when they get interviewed... and when they talk to their instructors in their class. There is certain conduct that we ask of them."

Despite what Norvell wants to make up on the fly, there aren't many people who believe he's telling the truth. Even at the beginning of his comments, he directed them squarely toward Sanders and the Buffs.

"I sat down with ESPN today," Norvell said last week. "I don't care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, I took my hat off and I took my glasses off. I said when I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat off and my glasses off. That's what my mother taught me. (Colorado's) not going to like us no matter what we say or do."

Norvell seemed to take a final shot at Colorado on the tail end of his most recent comments. It will probably be disputed, but it sure feels like another jab. Also, it's a complete contradiction from the cheap shot applied by CSU defensive back Henry Blackburn on CU two-way star Travis Hunter.

"We like to treat people with respect," Norvell said. "There's certain core values that our university has, that our former players have, that our alumni have. And so, we try to emulate those."

Norvell also said Blackburn was receiving death threats as a result of the hit on Hunter. He said the team was working with Fort Collins Police to resolve the matter. It appears Blackburn personal information was leaked online early Sunday morning.
