Colorado's Charles Kelly unapologetic for building a better team

The Buffs look to stun the world this year

Charles Kelly was thrown to the fire late and represented Colorado at Pac-12 Media Day with grace. The Buffaloes defensive coordinator fielded a slew of questions, including his thoughts on the roster reconstruction.

Despite all the outside noise from Oklahoma coach Brent Venables and others, Kelly says nobody at Colorado feels bad for using the transfer portal to compete. Also, Coach Prime didn't come to sit in his office and look at the flatirons all day.

"People have their opinion to say what they want to," Kelly said. "But we did within what the rules allow for us to be able to create the best roster possible for the University of Colorado. We don't apologize for that."

Deion Sanders inherited a bleak situation with very little to work with other than hitting outside sources. He has since built a great organization striving to be better than the results from last year. Sanders has trust for Kelly's decision making and it's a two-way street of respect. At times, the champion DC also showed some shades of Prime during the press conference.

"One of the things that I respect most about (Sanders) is he tells the truth," Kelly noted. "He made it very clear what his vision for our program was. As a leader, what you do is you make sure everybody in the organization understands your vision. We all understand that vision. It's not necessarily fear for our jobs; it's just this is our vision for where we want to go."

Kelly is confident Coach Prime will be ready to go for the start of the season. Colorado opens against TCU in Fort Worth on Sept. 2.
