Antwann Hill Jr. ready for next level with Deion Sanders and Colorado
We’ve reached the halfway point in the college football season. As the games go on, it’s time to look into the new recruiting classes.
Antwann Hill Jr. has made his decision by committing to the Colorado Buffaloes. The four-star quarterback out of Warner Robins, GA, has been a top recruit for many colleges, but Colorado stood out above the rest. The feeling is quite reciprocal, with Deion Sanders giving him a shout-out in this week's press conference saying he was "going to change the game."
"It wasn’t even the hype," Hill said about Sanders and Colorado. "In the first game against TCU, that was everybody's chance to see how they were going to do. I would have been satisfied with them, even if they had lost, but as long as it was a close game and I liked what I saw on offense, but, they ended up winning.
"That’s when it clicked in my head, that offense, they’re explosive, and I could see myself playing in it. When I saw how many yards Shedeur threw for and the concept and the schemes they were running. I really love what I saw from that game."
Hill felt that this offense could be a great place for him to showcase his abilities as a tremendous passer. In a scheme driven by Sean Lewis that boasts the third-highest passing yards per game across all conferences, it’s hard not to see why.
Not only could he show what he’s capable of but it would also give him the chance to develop the mind of a true NFL quarterback. That is the kind of player he sees in not only himself but in Shedeur Sanders as well. Hill knew he wanted to be a Buffalo from the first offensive series against TCU. The way the offense flowed through Sanders caught Hill’s eyes instantly.
"I see an offense that can put me in the league quickly and showcase all my talents," Hill said. "Such an explosive offense. They throw the ball 40-50 times a game. Shedeur makes a lot of NFL reads. I just really think that offense can prepare me for the NFL like it’s doing for Shedeur."
Hill began to learn the concept and pace of their offense. The up-tempo offense of the Buffs is a comfort zone for a player of Hill’s caliber. A few Colorado receivers have already reached out to Hill to work on some of the scheme concepts on offense.
One part of Hill’s game that seems to be overlooked is his ability to move around. He knows being paired with Lewis and an understudy of Sanders can expand his game, and he’s doing everything he can to show people how much he has grown. Hill's already taken the initiative to show his playmaking ability by using his legs to score as opposed to his arm. This marks his first season scoring on the ground. That could be a key element in the new age NFL that helped Hill influence his decision.
"I think people underestimate my speed and playmaking ability," Hill said. "But it’s easier now that a lot of scouts are seeing that I can make plays on my feet. Last year and sophomore year, I didn’t have a rushing touchdown or many rush yards. But this year, I got a couple of rushing touchdowns under my belt. Really just showing people that I’m not a pocket passer I can get out of certain situations that other QB can’t do. The great ones know how to handle that. I really think I’m showcasing that this year."
Hill has faith in this offense and the players in it. Oh, don’t think this is the only guy coming to Colorado. Hill has hinted at looking for a few more guys to join him.
"Some of the guys I want in Boulder are Amaree Williams, David Sanders, and Lamason Waller," Hill said. "I’m trying to recruit those big guys up front. So, I’m doing a lot of recruitment right now with a bunch of people. So, it’s gonna be a special class."
With a new recruit already headed to Colorado, one thing is certain, Coach Prime and his staff have their QB of the future.
