Duke basketball champ reportedly trying to buy NFL franchise

Duke basketball treasure Brian Davis could become an NFL owner.

According to a report on Monday morning from The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan, former two-time Duke basketball national champion Brian Davis put in a $7 billion offer last week to buy the Washington Commanders from current owners Dan and Tanya Snyder.

The 52-year-old, who has been involved in real estate ventures for years, some of which failed, reportedly raised the cash through a group of investors. And it's $1.5 billion more than any other offer that has been reported to date, per Hogs Haven's Scott Jennings.

However, as Jennings noted, it's far from a done deal:

"There is very little information about the group that Davis has reportedly put together, and this is a single sourced story so definitely proceed with caution until more information becomes available...If this offer is legitimate, and the Davis group is vetted and approved by the NFL, this would be the biggest offer linked to a potential bidder so far."

Davis, a Maryland native, spent four seasons as a Duke basketball power forward (1988-92) before going No. 48 overall at the 1992 NBA Draft. He lasted only one season in the league, averaging 1.9 points and 0.8 rebounds across 68 appearances for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

As a Blue Devil bruiser, Brian Davis improved from one year to the next and became a full-time starter in 1991-92. That squad finished with a 34-2 overall record, repeated as national champs, and arguably still stands as the best Duke basketball team in history.

But perhaps Davis' most significant college contribution came a year earlier in the form of an old-fashioned three-point play with a minute to play in Duke's eventual 79-77 upset win over UNLV in the 1991 Final Four game on the way to the program's first national championship.
