Duke Basketball: ESPN Cancels Blue Devil Legend's Show

Duke basketball great Jay Williams has been at ESPN for 15 years.

As part of ESPN's restructuring, the company is canceling its national morning radio show featuring Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson, and 2001 Duke basketball national champ Jay Williams, New York Post's Andrew Marchand reported on Wednesday afternoon.

Although the move does not mean the three hosts are out of a job entirely at ESPN, Marchand noted the expectation for "significant on-air layoffs to come as early as next week." However, he pointed out that Williams' future there might be safer than that of Kellerman or Johnson:

"Williams, whose contract is up at the end of the summer, is someone that ESPN likes and may try to keep, but his role would be different if he were to remain with the network."

The 41-year-old Jay Williams joined ESPN in 2008 as a full-time game and studio analyst. He's contributed to various shows over the years, nowadays making regular appearances on First Take, Get Up, and The Jump.

After scoring over 2,000 points in only three years during one of Duke basketball's most dominant stretches, Williams heard his name at No. 2 overall to the Chicago Bulls at the 2002 NBA Draft.

But a motorcycle accident in June 2003 effectively ended his playing career. He averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists as a rookie but never saw action in an NBA game beyond that, becoming one of the league's all-time what-ifs.

His No. 22 as a Blue Devil is one of the 13 jersey numbers forever hanging from Cameron Indoor Stadium's rafters.
