New Duke Basketball Guards Look Slick in Teaser Highlights
Given the roster construction, three-guard lineups figure to be a common Duke basketball sight next season, the second under the command of former Blue Devil guard Jon Scheyer.
Last season's starters on the perimeter, Jeremy Roach and Tyrese Proctor, are back. So are two other potential rotation pieces in Jaylen Blakes and Jaden Schutt.
Then add the two five-star combo guard newcomers in the mix, Caleb Foster and Jared McCain, and the Blue Devils are at least in the conversation for the nation's best backcourt.
Together, they'll complement a frontcourt that features returning ACC Rookie of the Year Kyle Filipowski, a fourth returning starter in Mark Mitchell, two five-star freshman forwards in TJ Power and Sean Stewart, 23-year-old graduate center Ryan Young, and the intriguing 7-foot-1, 260-pound sophomore big man Christian Reeves.
And by the looks of the brief highlights that the Duke basketball social media team released on Monday night — the NCAA permits a few hours of instruction time per week in the summer — Foster (No. 1) and McCain (No. 0) should excel at confidently attacking the lane and delivering precision passes to all of those frontcourt weapons:
That's not to mention their creative finishing abilities.
In the tweeted video above, Caleb Foster previews his penchant for getting buckets in traffic as he powers through Stewart's ball contact before softly laying it in with a bit of spin off the glass. Then there's his Tre Jones-esque needle-threading bounce pass, finding Young for an easy two.
As for Jared McCain, winner of the 2023 McDonald's All-American 3-Point Contest, his over-the-shoulder running toss to Stewart for a slam likely won't be the last folks see of that five-star rookie connection.
It's only 24 seconds of highlights altogether. Not all that much to go on.
But at about the midpoint of the offseason, with still roughly 120 days until the first game, yearlong Duke basketball daydreamers have no choice but to appreciate every snippet they can get.
