Duke basketball: Hilarious footage of Jon Scheyer correcting official
Many feel Duke basketball doesn't get as many friendly calls these days because Mike Krzyzewski is no longer around to command respect from officials. Some fans view first-year head coach Jon Scheyer as too soft-spoken and forgiving amidst questionable refereeing, wishing he would voice his displeasure more often.
After all, he's yet to earn his first technical.
But just because Scheyer doesn't project the same bark as Krzyzewski doesn't mean the 35-year-old isn't working the guys in stripes. He has a different style — a good-humored, matter-of-fact smart aleck.
The Duke basketball creative team captured that side of Scheyer perfectly following what turned out to be a temporarily momentum-shifting out-of-bounds call with 4:52 remaining in Tuesday night's 75-73 home win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (14-9, 6-6 ACC).
Although the Blue Devils (16-6, 7-4 ACC) ultimately prevailed, thanks to seven clutch points from seven-time ACC Rookie of the Week Kyle Filipowski down the stretch, they saw their lead dwindle from a comfortable 68-56 to a nerve-racking 70-66 across the three-plus minutes following the call.

And Duke's hilarious footage of Scheyer's reaction to the call ended up on the program's official TikTok account:

After Filipowski missed a stepback 3-point attempt, Ryan Young and Demon Deacons star Tyree Appleby reached for the rebound. As the slow-motion replay shows, the ball went out of bounds off Appleby's hand. However, the refs awarded possession to Wake Forest but not before taking a moment to discuss it.
Meanwhile, Appleby was standing a few feet from Jon Scheyer and looking at him with a sly grin. So Scheyer, who had already glanced up at the replay on the scoreboard to confirm his suspicion that the ball did not go off Young's hand, asked Appleby if he was the one who hit it out.
"Yeah, I hit it out," he answered with a giggle.
That's when Scheyer approached the official who made the call, John Gaffney, to inform him how laughable it was.
"He knows," Scheyer noted to Gaffney about Appleby's admission to getting away with it. "He's laughing because he hit it out."
How did Gaffney respond?
"I may be wrong," Gaffney told Scheyer.
Scheyer took it a step further, ensuring he got the last word.
"You are," Scheyer replied. "On that one, you are wrong."
