Duke Basketball Makes Room for New Banner in Cameron Indoor Stadium

Available space is diminishing in the rafters of Duke basketball's Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Undoubtedly, Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer hoped to advance past the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32 in his first year, with eyes on adding to the five national championship banners in historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. Still, by winning the ACC Tournament, the Blue Devils had a banner season in Cameron's terms.

They bumped Duke's record number of ACC Tournament titles to 22, with Scheyer becoming the first to cut down ACC Tournament nets as a player (2009, 2010) and head coach.

And so this offseason, it was again someone's job to make room in Cameron's rafters, this time needing to slide the preceding 2019 banner (along with the 2022 regular-season championship threads and others before it) to the left a smidge.

That honor belongs to Jeremy Anderson, Duke's director of athletic facilities, game operations, and championships. He posted the following picture of the boom-lift-enabled banner moves on Wednesday night:

It appears the 2023 ACC Tournament championship banner is already in place. But one would think the program may temporarily cover it up for a ceremonial unveiling to the Countdown to Craziness crowd on Oct. 20.

However, the primary focus of that night's attention will be on the second Duke basketball team under Scheyer's command, featuring eight returning scholarship players, including ACC Rookie of the Year Kyle Filipowski and three more starters, plus four five-star rookies.

Given their abundance of talent and experience, it wouldn't be a surprise if the 2023-24 Blue Devils, likely to begin the season ranked in the top five and projected to finish atop the ACC standings, force Anderson to dust off his boom-lift skills again around this time next summer.
