Duke basketball program misses out on one big transfer

Duke basketball must look elsewhere if it hopes to land a transfer center.

Kadin Shedrick looked like the Duke basketball staff's best chance to quickly snag a replacement for NBA-bound freshman Dereck Lively II via the transfer portal. The former Virginia big man, who drew 15 starts for the Cavaliers as a junior last season and averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds, visited the Blue Devils a few weeks ago.

And the 6-foot-11, 230-pound center then named five finalists and included Duke. Furthermore, Shedrick is a native of Holly Springs, N.C., just a short drive to Durham, and had made plans to return to the campus next weekend for a two-day visit with the Blue Devil coaches.

But now that won't happen because, on Sunday night, Shedrick announced to The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman that he is taking his talents to Texas, which he visited last week. He has the option to play two more seasons in college.

There was never any report of an offer to Shedrick from Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer and his gang. Perhaps the coaches are waiting to see which other of the nation's experienced centers might decide to enter the transfer portal in the coming weeks.

No transfers at any position have revealed an offer from Scheyer.

Although three Blue Devils with eligibility remaining have declared for this summer's NBA Draft, it's worth noting that Duke and UCLA are the only two power-conference programs that have yet to lose a player to the transfer portal this year.
