Duke basketball: Royals coming to Cameron Indoor Stadium next season

Duke basketball chief Jon Scheyer will see a fellow second-year head coach.

While the Duke basketball staff might be a week or more away from finalizing next season's roster, more news of the team's 2023-24 schedule is beginning to appear.

On Wednesday afternoon, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein reported that the Blue Devils scheduled a Dec. 29 home game against the Queens (N.C.) Royals. The tipoff time is unknown, but that date is on a Friday, so it will presumably be a night contest (probably at 7 p.m. ET).

It'll likely be Duke's first outing following Christmas break and serve as a final tune-up for Jon Scheyer's Blue Devils before they enter the heart of their ACC schedule.

The Royals made their Division I debut this past season, finishing 18-15 overall and at No. 9 (out of 14 teams) in the ASUN standings with a 7-11 record in conference play. But across the seven seasons leading up to their move to the big leagues, they combined for a 189-37 record, an 83.7 win percentage.

The program has enjoyed 13 consecutive winning seasons.

As with Scheyer, Royals head coach Grant Leonard will be in only his second year at the helm. And this will be the first all-time meeting between Duke and Queens.

In addition to the game against Queens, known pieces to the 2023-24 Duke basketball non-conference schedule include a home bout against the Arizona Wildcats on Nov. 10 and a Champions Classic meeting with the Michigan State Spartans at the United Center in Chicago four days later.
