Duke Basketball Big Man Now Heading to Transfer Portal

It appears Christian Reeves is unlikely to be on next season's Duke basketball roster.

With six heralded freshmen on the way but roughly a dozen current scholarship players with eligibility remaining, the Duke basketball program is bound to experience significant roster turnover in the coming weeks and months between early entries to the NBA Draft and transfers out of the program. And it looks as though redshirt sophomore center Christian Reeves is the first piece of news in this department.

On Wednesday afternoon, On3's Joe Tipton reported that Reeves, a 20-year-old Charlotte native who attend prep powerhouse Oak Hill (Va.) as a prep, plans to enter the transfer portal. The 7-foot-1, 260-pound giant and former three-star recruit has three years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.

Of course, given the addition of five-star centers Khaman Maluach and Patrick Ngongba II via the 2024 recruiting trail, the move by Reeves should come as no surprise.

Reeves, who arrived in Durham as a long-term project in a seven-deep, top-ranked 2022 recruiting class but impressed fans right away during Countdown to Craziness prior to his freshman year, had another promising performance during the CTC intrasquad scrimmage in October; he displayed innate instincts around the rim despite his less-than-ideal mobility. However, he played in only three games this season, all coming during non-conference action in November, before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery in January.

Across only 16 career appearances as a Blue Devil under Jon Scheyer, Christian Reeves averaged 1.6 points and 1.1 rebounds in 3.6 minutes per outing
