Smooth Duke Basketball Target Schedules September Visit to Durham

Duke basketball still looks like a contender in the Tyler Betsey race.

Things are heating up for the Duke basketball recruiters and others on the 2024 trail as more and more of the nation's elite rising high school seniors plan visits, consider finalists, and prepare to decide on a landing spot.

One such prep is St. Thomas More School (Conn.) four-star Tyler Betsey, who ranks No. 36 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite and has held an offer from the Blue Devils since November. At this week's Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C., he informed Zagsblog's Adam Zagoria that he is visiting Duke the weekend of Sept. 16.

By the sounds of his chat with Zagoria, the 6-foot-8, 185-pound silky small forward genuinely respects Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer and his staff, who visited him in his home in April. And it sure seems the Blue Devils remain alive in the race as he eyes a list cut in the next few weeks and a decision sometime in October.

"Jai Lucas, I talked to him," Tyler Betsey told Zagoria about Scheyer's second-year assistant. "Chris Carrawell, I talk to him a lot. They just show me how good they are with freshmen, like the freedom that they give their freshmen. This year, they started off rough, everybody was talking about them, but they let their freshmen play through their mistakes.

"The same mistakes they made in December or at the beginning of the year, they weren't making in March. And they made a run and won the ACC, and then they won a game in the [NCAA Tournament], so obviously, that's a pretty first successful season as a head coach."

Last month, Betsey made trips to Creighton, Indiana, and UConn. Other notable suitors he mentioned to Zagoria are Alabama, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma State.

Meanwhile, it's worth noting that Duke basketball's 2024 recruiting haul already consists of two small forwards: North Meck High School (N.C.) five-star Isaiah Evans and Paul VI Catholic High School (Va.) four-star Darren Harris.
