South Carolina State Expected To Hire Benedict Head Coach Chennis Berry
South Carolina State is expected to announce Chennis Berry as the next head football coach. Berry will replace former head coach Buddy Pough, who retired this season after 22 seasons.
Berry is 27-7 over three seasons with the Tigers, leading Benedict to back-to-back SIAC titles in the past two seasons. He was named the Region 2 Coach of the Year by AFCA for the second consecutive season.
Before his stint at Benedict, Berry served as the offensive coordinator at Southern (2013-19), North Carolina A&T (2009-10), and Morgan State (2006-08). He was also the co-offensive coordinator at Howard for two seasons (2011-12).
Berry played offensive tackle at Savannah State (1991-94) and earned first-team All-SIAC honors as a senior.
An official announcement is expected soon as the SC State Board of Trustees will meet on Thursday. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
