Texas Southern Expected To Name Fred McNair As Next Head Football Coach
Texas Southern is expected to announce Fred McNair as the next head football coach for the Tigers. The news was first reported by HBCU Sports on Wednesday.
The university announced that former head coach Clarence McKinney would not return after a disappointing 3-8 season. McKinney finished his career with an overall record of 12-35 over five seasons.
McNair is a two-time SWAC Coach of the Year and led Alcorn State to back-to-back Celebration Bowl appearances in 2018-19. He is 48-33 since 2016 and has won two SWAC Championships with the Braves.
Alcorn State and McNair were negotiating a new contract as McNair's current contract was set to expire this month. Sources suggest there was a disagreement on the length of the new contract between the two parties.
A formal announcement from the university is expected this week. The Texas Southern University Board of Trustees will meet Thursday to approve a potential four-year contract worth over $310,000, according to Kyle Mosley of HBCU Legends.
Update (Dec. 19): Alcorn State officially announced that Fred McNair will not return as the head coach of the Braves. Many reports expect McNair to be the next head coach at Texas Southern but has not received an official offer.
