Gators Top PG Target Dedan Thomas Jr. Scheduled to Commit Sunday
The first major domino in Todd Golden’s recruiting efforts in 2024 is ready to fall.
Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) High point guard product Dedan Thomas Jr. is closing in on a highly anticipated commitment Sunday.
The Gators, who have aggressively pursued Thomas to this point, are set to anxiously await his announcement as he chooses between Arizona, Florida, Gonzaga, Houston, UCLA and UNLV at 2 p.m. EST, according to a countdown timer posted to his Instagram Story on Saturday.
Standing at 6-foot-1, 170-pound floor general who possesses the ball handling, facilitation and three-level scoring ability the Gators seek in their point guard of the future, Thomas is arguably the most important piece to the puzzle in 2024.
He’s been treated as such by Florida.
Thomas stopped by campus for an official visit to Gainesville in early March, where he built a strong rapport with the Gators head coach and assistants to warrant confidence in his potential to pledge himself to UF.
Although buzz has circulated for him to be trending elsewhere in the last 24 hours, Florida remains a legitimate contender.
If the Gators are able to pin down Thomas, he will serve as a game-changing addition to the 2024 class as the face of Florida’s recruiting endeavors. From there, Golden and his staff could shift their focus fully to the front court as they attempt to reel in elite prospects Flory Bidunga and John Bol.
However, if Thomas choose another destination for his collegiate career, the Gators will have to rebuild their guard board while simultaneously focusing on the two aforementioned center targets.
As a result, the Mother’s Day pledge will be one to watch intently no matter the outcome.
