Todd Golden's emphasis on recruiting internationally prevails to bolster Florida's recruiting class for the second class in a row.
Alex Condon, an NBA Global Academy (Australia) center prospect, committed to the Gators on Thursday evening, according to 247Sports. Condon told the Florida staff of his intentions to commit just moments following the upset victory over Tennessee on Wednesday night. He publicly announced that pledge on Thursday.
He chose the Gators over Saint Mary's and Utah weeks after an official visit to Gainesville for Florida's bout with Missouri in mid-January.
"I chose Florida because I believe that it was the best fit for me," Condon told 247Sports' basketball recruiting analyst Travis Branham. "They are great people and the new coach is young and enthusiastic. Everyone was really welcoming and I got to meet all of the boys. It was an impressive school from the start of the visit to the end."
Standing at 6-foot-11, 230 pounds, Condon presents the size comparative to current Gators big man Colin Castleton as a lean but long prospect at the five. While he isn't equipped with the polish, namely the footwork or assortment of post moves, of the Deland, Fla., native — as he's still relatively new to playing basketball — he has the tangibles and potential for growth Golden looks for in a big.
His ability to run the floor and alter shots as a rim protector aligns with the Gators' defensive-first game plan seen from the unit this season. Assistants Kevin Hovde (offense) and Carlin Hartman (frontcourt) will take on the task of developing Condon's arsenal down low on the offensive end.
The Canberra recruit joins recent Florida signee Thomas Haugh in the 2023 class. The two will bolster the UF frontcourt set to experience vast attrition this upcoming offseason.
