Former Gators Wing Niels Lane Commits to Delaware
The five transfers out of the Gators’ program following the 2022-23 season have all found new homes.
On Sunday evening, former Florida wing Niels Lane shared his intentions to transfer to Delaware, where he can fill a crucial role in the Blue Hens retooled attack next season.
He joins Kowacie Reeves Jr. (Georgia Tech), Jason Jitoboh (Tennessee State), CJ Felder (McNeese State) and Trey Bonham (UT-Chattanooga) as former UF talent to announce his transfer destination this offseason.
He made the move after three seasons in Gainesville and his first under head coach Todd Golden — in which he saw significant regression in playing time.
Lane emerged as a valuable contributor to close the 2021-22 season via his defensive prowess. Although expected to take on a larger role in the 2022-23 campaign, where he could be utilized to halt the oppositions top scoring options with his length and high-level on-ball pressure, his offensive game failed to supplement that effort on the other end.
That came paired with inhibiting foul trouble when he did see time on the floor.
As a result, for the third season in a row, Lane fell victim to his own lapses to be buried in the rotation. He finished his career at UF averaging 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 10.6 minutes per game over 49 appearances (three starts).
The Freehold, N.J., native will now head north to cap off his collegiate career. The rising senior holds two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Florida, on the other hand, continues to rebuild its roster following a mass exodus of talent from a year ago.
The Gators have added Walter Clayton Jr., EJ Jarvis, Tyrese Samuel and Micah Handlogten to the unit to patch the holes created by the eight departure from a season ago. The quartet join returning starters Riley Kugel and Will Richard as key pieces for the unit next season.
North Texas guard transfer Tylor Perry, who’s scheduled to choose between Florida, Kansas State, Ole Miss and Texas Tech on May 2, aligns as the staff’s top priority moving into the crucial fifth month of the year.
Three scholarship spots remain open.
