Gators Land Pledge from Transfer PG Zyon Pullin
Update: Zyon Pullin has officially signed at the University of Florida, the program announced on Thursday.
“We are very excited to welcome Zyon into our program here at Florida,” Golden said about the addition via the team’s press release. “He’s a very talented, mature young man who’s won a lot of games in college and been very productive along the way. He has great positional size and plays with great pace and tempo. He will be a great asset to our team this year.”
Todd Golden has secured his point guard.
Freshly removed from a visit to the University of Florida June 3-4, as previously reported by All Gators, UC Riverside point guard transfer Zyon Pullin elected to shut down his recruitment process by making Gainesville his permanent home.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello first reported the news Wednesday. The program and Pullin confirmed his pledge shortly thereafter.
He chose the Gators over interest from Gonzaga, LSU, Michigan and Xavier. The likes of which appeared in the top five he released shortly removed from his withdrawal from the 2023 NBA Draft on May 31.
Since his arrival in March 2022, Golden has taken a concerted approach to adding talent in the backcourt to his roster. Specifically, he's looked for well-versed guards who can operate as sufficient floor generals and provide a dynamic presence as a scorer and defender.
Pullin, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, is an archetype.
Possessing an elite scoring presence with the ability to contribute at all three levels efficiently, the former Highlander accounted for 18.3 points on 48.6% shooting from the field and 39.4% from three in his senior season. His shot creation ability off the dribble — whether getting to the basket to execute a scoop layup or floater, stopping his momentum to hit turnaround midrange jumpers or pulling up from distance for triples — provides UF another supplement to star player Riley Kugel's duties as the team's primary option.
But, he's not limited to solely scoring. Pullin can also produce as a facilitator and rebounder, averaging 4.2 assists and 4.4 boards per game in 2022-23.
The desirable skill set was on display frequently in the Big West conference during his time at UCR, backed up by his performances at Oregon (21 points, five rebounds and three assists), Colorado (17 points and six rebounds) and Creighton (eight points, six rebounds, two assists) in the program's out-of-conference slate.
The Pleasant Hill (Calif.) native is expected to fulfill the Gators' starting one-guard spot, with Walter Clayton Jr. occupying the two as his partner in the backcourt. Kugel, EJ Jarvis and Tyrese Samuel will likely appear at the three-through-five while wing Will Richard and center Micah Handlogten serve valuable minutes off the bench.
Pullin fills one of Florida's three scholarship openings heading into the summer.
