Gators Announce Captains for Week Two Contest vs. McNeese Cowboys
Running back Trevor Etienne, left tackle Austin Barber, defensive end Tyreak Sapp and linebacker Derek Wingo will occupy Florida's captain responsibilities in week two against McNeese, the program announced on Friday afternoon.
The group comprises a new batch of leaders in 2023, each taking on a more significant role this season after flashing promise at points during the previous campaign.
When asked about his philosophy on captains prior to his first game as the head coach at UF in August 2022, head coach Billy Napier outlined his plan to provide the team a full-season sample size before voting on permanent representatives in the ensuing season.
"We wait until the season's over and then we let the players vote and really observe the entire body of work," he said. "I think the season is where leadership emerges. ... And I think we'll let the players vote on the full body of work at the end of the year."
Week one suggested that to be the case as four core pillars of the Gators roster were named.
However, after announcing four different names at captain on Friday for week two, it looks like Florida will break from the previously desired decision-making system laid out by Napier to continue the rotation of leadership it deployed a year ago.
The quartet in week two joins Montrell Johnson Jr., Ricky Pearsall, Jason Marshall Jr. and Princely Umanmielen as players to represent the Gators at midfield in 2023 thus far.
