CBS Mock: Could Anthony Richardson Become Florida's First No. 1 Draft Pick?
From the moment Anthony Richardson declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, and plenty of times prior, speculation around his floor and ceiling both as a quarterback and draft pick have been all over the place.
As the NFL Combine approaches, though, the consensus feels Richardson's physical prowess will help him make a move.
It's a matter of how high.
CBS Sports said it would be straight to the top this week, as Chris Trapasso slated the former Florida Gator No. 1 overall to Indianapolis, via projected trade with Chicago, after what is sure to be a head-turning performance in the Colts' building come early next month.
"I think Richardson is going to emphatically remove the lid from Lucas Oil Stadium at the NFL combine," Trapasso wrote. "That will lead to the Colts taking a chance on him, given the hiring of former Eagles [offensive coordinator] Shane Steichen as head coach. Richardson has similarities to Jalen Hurts and All-Pro upside."
Should Richardson become the first selection of the 2023 NFL Draft, he would not only make headlines as the first quarterback selected in a loaded field including College Football Playoff quarterbacks Bryce Young (Alabama) and C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) — he would also stand as the first Florida product to earn the No. 1 overall selection.
Cam Newton spent time at Florida before two transfers, ahead of his No. 1 selection in 2010, but of course he was selected as an Auburn product following the Heisman and national championship campaign. Perhaps ironically, many in NFL circles are comparing Richardson's physical gifts to that of Newton or Hurts, among others.
Richardson finished his UF career with 24 appearances and 13 starts, accumulating 3,105 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 15 interceptions with a completion percentage of 54.7. He added 1,116 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground at 6.9 yards per rush.
The 2023 NFL Draft will take place in Kansas City, Mo. from April 27-29.
