University of Florida executive associate athletics director for external affairs, Jay Jacobs, plans to retire from college athletics at the end of June, according to Mark Long of the Associated Press.

Jacobs, who began a coaching career in 1984 before transitioning into athletic directorial roles in 1991, will have spent the final five years of his career at Florida after a 13-year stint (2005-18) as the athletic director at Auburn, his alma mater and long-time employer.

“It’s bittersweet,” Jacobs said to the AP about his imminent retirement. “Made some great relationships over the years. It’s tough to leave, but it’ll be fun what I’m about to do regardless of where I’m at geographically.”

According to UF's staff directory, Jacobs has overseen all of Florida’s external units including communications, marketing, ticketing, licensing and Gator Boosters during his time with the program. He has also served as the sport administrator for the football program.

Jacobs was hired by Florida in June 2018 by UF athletic director Scott Stricklin, who joined the program in Nov. 2016. The two worked together in the Auburn athletic offices from 1993-98.

“Florida Athletics is fortunate to have someone of Jay’s caliber joining the UAA. His character, vision, experience and ability to connect with people will be tremendous assets to our department," Stricklin said in a statement upon Jacobs' hiring.

Jacobs plans to remain involved with college athletics in a non-employment role in retirement, per the AP.

“It’s going to be an adjustment," Jacobs said, "because I don’t know any other life than this.”
