Florida Flips Cincinnati EDGE Transfer Commit George Gumbs Jr.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Northern Illinois edge rusher George Gumbs Jr. announced his transfer commitment to Florida on Thursday afternoon.
Gumbs joins Florida as the program's fifth defensive transfer acquisition of the offseason, and its third along the defensive front, alongside Pennsylvania's Joey Slackman and Blinn College's (JUCO) Brien Taylor Jr.
A rising redshirt junior, Gumbs joins Florida with two seasons of college eligibility remaining.
Gumbs, a product of Chicago (Ill.) Simeon from the recruiting class of 2021, joined Northern Illinois as a consensus three-star wide receiver but moved to tight end to begin his college career. He caught four passes for 44 yards over eight games of action in 2022.
He flipped to the defensive side of the ball ahead of the 2023 season and found his groove when the campaign got underway. As a 6-foot-4, 242-pound defensive end, Gumbs tallied 32 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles over 12 appearances. He started the final seven games of the year.
Gumbs entered the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 12, 2023, and originally committed to transfer to Cincinnati, on Dec. 16. Florida entered the mix for his services upon the turn of the year, however, and hosted Gumbs on a transfer visit that concluded on Thursday.
Gumbs is Florida's seventh overall transfer pickup of the offseason and second of the day on Thursday, hours following the commitment of former South Carolina linebacker Grayson "Pup" Howard.
